While the SEC might not be the most dominant conference in college football anymore, there is no argument to be had that it does, in fact, mean more. And that is coming from a kid who grew up about as far from SEC country as one can.

While it means more to fans and citizens alike, the players need to get back in their heads that it means more to play in the SEC.

2025 was the third season in a row that no SEC team even made it to the national championship. Ole Miss was the last team standing last season, as they lost to Miami in the semifinals. Another Georgia collapse in the playoffs, combined with embarrassments from Alabama and Texas A&M, left yet another disappointing showing for the once-premier conference on the biggest stage of the year.

2026 looks to be the year that someone can claim the title once again. Loaded with talent at the top, teams like Texas, Georgia, and LSU have great chances to make a run. Oklahoma, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M want to build off playoff appearances last year and prove that they, too, should be considered among the greats of this era.

Meanwhile, teams like Tennessee, Missouri, and South Carolina look to spoil anyone's season, any way they can. There are no off weeks in the SEC, well maybe when you play Arkansas, which provide for action packed drama, all season long.

1. Georgia

2025 Results: The Bulldogs started out the year ranked No. 5 and hovered around that number all season. Losing to Alabama at the end of September was their only regular-season blemish. Wins against five ranked opponents helped propel them into the SEC Championship, where they got revenge on Alabama and earned the No. 3 seed in the playoff.

Unfortunately for the Dawgs, Ole Miss got its own revenge after Georgia's October 18th victory and knocked the Bulldogs out of the playoffs in Georgia's first game for the second straight year.

Keys to 2026: Head coach Kirby Smart has himself yet another quality football team heading into 2026. Gunnar Stockton returns for his senior year and what will be his second full season as the starter for the Dawgs.

Losing receivers Zachariah Branch, Dillon Bell, Colbie Young, and Noah Thomas to the NFL is a bigger deal than people think. Those four receivers led the Bulldogs in receiving in 13 of their 14 games. Only London Humphreys returns with any real production, while Smart went to the portal and brought in Isaiah Canion. Look for a lot of the offense to be run through returning running back Nate Frazier to start the year.

Something that also went under the radar last year was that only one of Georgia's ranked wins came in a true road game: Tennessee. This year will need to be different. While the Bulldogs get to host the likes of Oklahoma and Georgia Tech, they must travel to Alabama and Ole Miss in hopes of keeping a perfect SEC record alive.

2026 Prediction: 11-1

2. Texas

2025 Results: A Week 1 loss at Ohio State didn't derail the Longhorns' season, but it provided much concern going forward. While the defense played well, Arch Manning looked a little too much like a deer in headlights. An inexplicable loss to a bad Florida team just confirmed what everyone had been thinking, and people sounded the alarm.

That's when things turned around. Wins over Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, and Texas A&M really showcased Manning's ability and made Texas look like the contender people thought they would be. Only a loss to Georgia in Athens was their mishap the rest of the year. Finishing at 9-3, with the loss to Florida keeping them out of the playoff, a Citrus Bowl win over Michigan gave the Longhorns a 10-win season.

Keys to 2026: It starts with Arch. There was a big jump from his play at the beginning of the season compared to the end. I would like to think that the time he's spent developing over the last year has only improved his game and that he's going to hit the ground running.

Ryan Wingo returns for the Longhorns, but more importantly, the nation's best receiver in the portal, Cam Coleman, chose to transfer to Texas. With those weapons and Steve Sarkisian's offensive mind, anything is possible for the Longhorns' offense this season.

Their schedule is a doozy, though. Ohio State comes to Austin in Week 2, which I think is a much better idea than having them come play in Week 1 when nothing has been worked out yet. But their SEC schedule sees games against Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida, Ole Miss, LSU, and Texas A&M.

With little room to slip up if they want to make the playoff, the Longhorns must be sharp and ready to go at all times.

2026 Prediction: 10-2

3. Oklahoma

2025 Results: The year started off great with wins against ranked Michigan and Auburn teams. They entered the Red River Shootout ranked No. 6 and heavily favored. It seemed like they might have rushed Mateer back from injury too quickly, as their offense was nonexistent and they got killed.

I'm not going to lie, as they sat there at 5-1, I remember writing that it was going to be a struggle to get to 6-6 that season. With a gauntlet of a schedule ahead, Oklahoma had almost zero margin for error. A win against South Carolina followed by a loss to Ole Miss put them at 6-2, with all of their remaining games against ranked opponents.

Wins against Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, and LSU propelled the Sooners into the playoffs, where they got to host Alabama. The Tide would get their revenge, ending the Sooners' season at home.

Keys to 2026: John Mateer's health. Through the first three and a half games, Mateer looked like a runaway Heisman favorite. When he broke his thumb, everything changed. Even when he came back, he didn't look comfortable until late in the season.

If Mateer can stay healthy, he has weapons like Isaiah Sategna, Xavier Robinson, and Tory Blaylock returning. There is no doubt that the Sooners' defense is going to be the bright spot. This crew was all together last season and wreaked havoc on offenses all year. They will no doubt do it again, making the biggest factor in how far the Sooners go their offense.

There were times last season when it seemed like the offense completely disappeared. I am going to chalk that up to Mateer's hand injury, and based on the early fall camp photos we've seen of John, it looks like he's taken injury prevention into his own hands.

The Sooners must now face another gauntlet of a schedule, starting with a trip to the Big House to take on an unknown Michigan team in Week 2. There is very little rest, as they open SEC play against Georgia and then Texas. It cools off a little bit before they host Ole Miss and Texas A&M in November.

Like we learned with Texas last year, it doesn't matter how hard the schedule is; you have to win games if you want to make the playoff.

2026 Prediction: 10-2

4. LSU

2025 Results: With Brian Kelly and Garrett Nussmeier, it seemed like nothing was going to stop the Tigers. An opening win at Clemson looked sharp, but four losses in five weeks to Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, and Alabama derailed the Tigers' season very quickly.

Pair that with the season-ending loss to Oklahoma and a bowl loss to Houston, along with the fact that Nussmeier was below average and, oh yeah, they fired Brian Kelly during their losing streak, and this was a season Tiger fans want to forget.

Keys to 2026: With definitely the most internet-engaging offseason, LSU brought in Lane Kiffin late in 2025 to be the head coach of the Tigers. Although it seems like most of the drama has calmed down, there was plenty of it to go around in early 2026.

From trash-talking Ole Miss and Oxford, to trying to recruit players in the transfer portal who had signed contracts, to not even trying to get players he coached at Ole Miss, the 2026 LSU Tigers looked to be generating millions of clicks—as Lane does whenever he goes somewhere.

Lane got his guy in Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt, along with a slew of offensive talent to put around him. Lane Kiffin is always so much of a wild card, but there is one thing he is great at: coaching quarterbacks.

With this team, there are only two options: they succeed or they flop. And after what Kiffin did at Ole Miss, I have a hard time seeing them flop.

Clemson isn't what they used to be, and after a much-anticipated trip to Oxford in Week 3, the Tigers get to host Texas A&M, Texas, and Alabama.

2026 Prediction: 10-2

5. Alabama

2025 Results: After the opening loss to Florida State, the Crimson Tide turned it on, beating four ranked opponents, including Georgia, until they ran into the Oklahoma defense. Despite losing to the Sooners, the Iron Bowl win got them into the conference title game. Georgia got its revenge, but nonetheless, the Tide had done enough to earn a playoff spot. They then got their revenge against Oklahoma before getting stomped by the eventual champs, Indiana, 38-3.

Keys to 2026: As Kalen DeBoer enters his third season as head coach of the Tide, there are a lot of questions about whether he was the right hire to follow Saban. The answer to that question is no—there is never a right coach to follow the greatest coach of all time—but DeBoer has earned himself some scrutiny.

As ESPN senior college football writer Pete Thamel broke on Saturday, Keelon Russell was named the starter for the Tide.

A huge announcement, as he beat out Austin Mack to take the job. Ryan Williams looks to bounce back after a very disappointing sophomore season. He did get married this offseason and switched his number back to No. 1. Hopefully, these changes help him break out into the player we all know he can be.

A fairly gettable schedule for the Tide sees Georgia come to Tuscaloosa, while the Tide must play on the Third Saturday in October in Knoxville and travel to Death Valley to take on the Tigers in November.

2026 Prediction: 10-2

6. Ole Miss

2025 Results: An early win against LSU set up what would be a special season for the Rebels. A blown fourth quarter against Georgia in Athens was the only blemish on an otherwise great regular season for Lane Kiffin's Ole Miss team. Kiffin then decided to leave, and the defense stepped up in a huge way, getting revenge on Georgia in the Sugar Bowl before falling to Miami in the semifinals.

Keys to 2026: Pete Golding now takes over in what will be his first full season as head coach of the Rebels. While he did coach them through the playoff, a full SEC season is far different than the postseason.

Golding was able to get a much-needed win by retaining Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy. Those two look to lead the powerful offense that people came to know and love during the Kiffin era at Ole Miss.

The Rebels start off the year against a dangerous Louisville team in Nashville before, just two weeks later, hosting Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers. Games against Georgia, Texas, and Oklahoma mean the Rebels face what I think are four of the best teams in the SEC. Being able to win just half of those games would set them up in a great spot for the postseason.

2026 Prediction: 9-3

7. Tennessee

2025 Results: What was expected to be a down year for the Volunteers saw a late lead slip away after a missed field goal as time expired, allowing Georgia to win in overtime. A poorly run Spider 2 Y Banana on Alabama's goal line led to a pick-six, which ended up being the difference in the Third Saturday of October, and just a lack of effort against Oklahoma and Vanderbilt ended the season at 8-4 for the Vols.

The end result was predictable, but watching the games showed that if a few plays had gone the other way, it could have been a special season.

Keys to 2026: At this point, Sunday, 8/23, Josh Heupel still has not named a starting quarterback. The battle is between true freshman Faizon Brandon and redshirt freshman George MacIntyre. All reports coming out of Knoxville seem to lean toward Brandon being the guy for the Volunteers, with an expected announcement coming any day now.

Whoever wins the job will have plenty of weapons on the outside, as Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley both return after outstanding receiving seasons last year. DeSean Bishop also returns in the backfield, looking to build upon his 1,000-plus-yard season last year.

Overall, it looks like Heupel has held onto his key players well, and whichever freshman starts under center should have plenty to build with. Games against Texas, Alabama, and LSU will require almost perfect football to win, while games against Texas A&M and Georgia Tech are winnable but shouldn't be overlooked.

2026 Prediction: 9-3

8. South Carolina

2025 Results: What was supposed to be a special season for the Gamecocks and LaNorris Sellers went sideways quickly. Eventually going 1-7 in conference play, six of those losses came against ranked teams, but it doesn't matter—they were supposed to win at least a few of those games. A 4-8 final record saw wins over Kentucky and Virginia Tech as their only wins over Power Four schools.

Keys to 2026: I was really high on Sellers last year, and while I am not as high on him this year (spoiler: he's not my Heisman pick this year), I think he should be better than he was last year.

That, coupled with the defensive presence that the Gamecocks will have, makes me think that if they do have just as bad of a season, it is 100% on Shane Beamer. Beamer is squarely on the hot seat and has no margin for error this season. Like, zero.

I firmly believe that they do turn it around a little bit, and games against Alabama, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Florida, Clemson, Georgia, and Oklahoma are the key. Three of them will be played in Williams-Brice Stadium, while the four against Alabama, Florida, Clemson, and Oklahoma are on the road.

Being able to win just three of those games puts South Carolina in a good spot to rebound from last year.

2026 Prediction: 8-4

9. Florida

2025 Results: The win over Texas was the only bright spot in a 4-8 season that involved firing Billy Napier after a win over Mississippi State. DJ Lagway didn't pan out the way people thought he would, and everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

Keys to 2026: Jon Sumrall comes into Gainesville after two successful years at Tulane. Sumrall brought in Aaron Philo from Georgia Tech, and he looks to be the spark for the offense. Jadan Baugh looks to build off an impressive sophomore season, while the defense stays very similar to last season.

A fairly favorable SEC schedule sees the Gators avoid playing Alabama, LSU, and Tennessee. Games against Ole Miss and Oklahoma will be held in the Swamp and could help the Gators improve on last season's blunders.

2026 Prediction: 7-5

10. Texas A&M

2025 Results: An 11-0 start for the Aggies looked amazing to the casual fan, but when you dove into the numbers, you could tell something was off. The win at Notre Dame in Week 2 was no fluke, but after that, their only notable wins were against LSU and Missouri. Both ended the season unranked and were barely in the top 25.

While they won most games with ease, there wasn't much of a challenge in those games. That was evident as they ended up losing the final regular-season game against Texas and then scored only three points in their first-round home playoff game against Miami. Overall, it was a very disappointing end to a great season.

Keys to 2026: Marcell Reed needs to take care of the football. He struggled in many big moments last year, and this year's schedule for the Aggies isn't what it was last season. Alabama, Oklahoma, and Tennessee are all added to their schedule, while teams like Texas and LSU remain. LSU, in particular, I think, is going to be much better competition.

The loss of KC Concepcion is a big one for the Aggies' offense, but hopefully, Isaiah Horton, a transfer from Miami, can bring some much-needed production.

Look for the Aggies to take a step back this year, not because they are much worse, but because I think the teams around them got significantly better while Texas A&M stayed stagnant. And the schedule for those in College Station is no joke.

2026 Prediction: 6-6

11. Missouri

2025 Results: A season that consisted of beating all the unranked teams and losing to all the ranked teams. Nothing screams Missouri football more than that. A three-point loss to Alabama was the closest they came all year to beating a ranked team on their way to an 8-5 season.

Keys to 2026: Head coach Eli Drinkwitz starts his seventh season with the Tigers and brings in former Ole Miss starter Austin Simmons. The southpaw looks to sling it all over Columbia, Missouri, but there is something that needs to be looked at.

Simmons was the starter at Ole Miss to begin the season, but after going down with an injury, he lost the job to Chambliss. Now, LSU head coach Lane Kiffin wanted Simmons at Ole Miss, but this offseason, while trying to find a quarterback for LSU, he didn't even look Simmons' way.

That has to be evidence that what Kiffin saw in those first few games at Ole Miss wasn't what he wanted. So, what should make me think that Simmons is going to come in and save Missouri football?

On top of the whole Simmons fiasco, Ahmad Hardy, who would be the best running back in the nation, was shot in the offseason.

While he was cleared by doctors, it was reported that he won't be ready for the start of the season. There is no timetable for Hardy's return, as he looks to get back to tip-top shape before he hits the field.

Once again, playing teams like Ole Miss, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Texas doesn't leave a lot of room for error, and if not everyone is healthy, things could get out of control fast for the Tigers.

2026 Prediction: 6-6

12. Vanderbilt

2025 Results: A 10-3 season set the school record for the most wins in a single season in program history. Losses only to Alabama and Texas put the Commodores squarely in the conversation for the playoff. They ultimately missed out and lost to Iowa in the ReliaQuest Bowl, but nonetheless had a successful season that included Diego Pavia being a Heisman finalist.

Keys to 2026: While Clark Lea has built a more sustainable program in Nashville, it's hard for me to believe that sustained success at last year's level will become the norm. True freshman Jared Curtis looks to start for the Commodores as they look to once again wreak havoc in the SEC.

Losing their top rusher and receiver from last year—Pavia to graduation and Tre Richardson to Louisville—the Commodores do have the second-leading statistical producer in both categories returning. Sedrick Alexander will need to take a huge step forward as the lead back. Especially without the helping legs of Pavia, Alexander will need to carry more of the load.

Junior Sherrill wasn't too far behind Richardson in receiving yards and actually equaled him in touchdowns. He will need to be a big target for Curtis to look for if they want to have any success.

The Commodores do have their schedule working in their favor. Not having to play Texas or LSU helps, but they can't get caught looking past anyone else if they want to get back to that same elite level.

2026 Prediction: 6-6

13. Auburn

2025 Results: The Hugh Freeze experience ended with the dumpster fire that most people thought it would. A 1-7 record in SEC play saw their only win come against Arkansas. Freeze was fired after a 10-3 loss to Kentucky, putting a close to that chapter of Tiger football.

Keys to 2026: Alex Golesh comes to Auburn after a successful tenure at South Florida. With him, he brings dual-threat quarterback Byrum Brown, along with nine other offensive transfers who are expected to start. Only Jeremiah Cobb remains from the Tigers' offense last season.

Cobb rushed for just under 1,000 yards and looks to build upon that this year. While I think Golesh is a good hire for the Tigers, I think it is going to take some time. Things are just moving too fast everywhere else around the Tigers, and I don't think they'll be able to compete week in and week out with the likes of Alabama, Georgia, and LSU.

They might be able to catch lightning in a bottle once, but not much more than that.

2026 Prediction: 5-7

14. Mississippi State

2025 Results: The upset win against Arizona State had Starkville believing that something special could happen, but yet another SEC season ended with a 1-7 conference record, with their only win coming against Arkansas. The low point of the season was the 14-point blown lead in the final minutes against Texas that resulted in an overtime loss.

Keys to 2026: Jeff Lebby looks to continue slowly building the Bulldogs back to what the late, great Mike Leach had them close to becoming before he passed away in 2022. Kamario Taylor looks to have a breakout season, while leading rusher from 2025 Fluff Bothwell returns as well.

While Taylor played in limited action last season, standing 6'4" and weighing 230 pounds, he's awfully close to the size of what Cam Newton was at Auburn. The upside with him is astronomical, and he could turn into a household name fairly quickly into the season.

The bad news for the Bulldogs? Arkansas isn't on their schedule this season.

2026 Prediction: 4-8

15. Kentucky

2025 Results: Conference wins against Auburn and Florida led to a 4-8 regular season that saw Mark Stoops fired after the year.

Keys to 2026: Will Stein takes over as the head coach after coming over from Oregon, and there haven't been more questions surrounding Kentucky football in a long time. Kenny Minchey transfers in from Notre Dame, along with 12 other starters on offense and defense.

While there is a possibility that Stein and Minchey could work very well together, you'll never be able to tell until the season starts. A first-year head coach and first-year starting quarterback in the SEC never bring predictable outcomes.

Having to play Alabama, LSU, and Oklahoma in conference play, along with playing a very good Louisville team in the final week of the season, doesn't provide an easy first-year schedule for Stein.

2026 Prediction: 3-9

16. Arkansas

2025 Results: Starting off 2-0, good. Finishing the season 2-10, not so good. Head coach Sam Pittman was fired after the 56-13 drubbing that Notre Dame handed the Razorbacks in Fayetteville. Bobby Petrino took over for the final seven games but couldn't find a win.

Keys to 2026: Ryan Silverfield now takes over the Razorbacks after six successful seasons at Memphis. Unfortunately for him, I'm not sure there is a lot that can be done to help his case. Losing Taylen Green, Mike Washington, and O'Mega Blake means losing their top three offensive producers and having to replace over 4,500 yards of offense.

KJ Jackson, who saw limited action last year, will be tasked with that objective under center. As always, Arkansas is seen as the exhale week for other SEC schools, and to change that, they'll need to start winning.

2026 Prediction: 2-10

Looking Ahead

This marks the final conference preview of the season. As we are just five days away from the start of Week 0, next week I'll publish my playoff bracket projection and Heisman Trophy projections.
